Registration Troubleshooting

Having trouble with the online registration system? Here’s a few helpful hints.

Problem: I put in my driver’s license number, but when I click submit, only my name and birthday appear filled in, and the other fields are blank.

Answer: This could mean one of two things. First, it could mean that you are not currently registered to vote. If this is the case, then you should go ahead and complete the rest of the fields. (Make sure to choose “Working Families Party” for your political party!) Once you hit submit and confirm that the information is accurate, you’ll be registered to vote.

If you know that you are already registered, then this probably means that one piece of the information you entered along with your driver’s license does not match what the DMV has on file. If you have moved since you last renewed your license, you should use the zip code written on your license, because that is what is in the DMV’s database. If you sometimes go by a nickname, you should be sure to write your name as it is printed on your license.

If you have confirmed that the information is correct, and you still are not given a form with all of the information completed, you can still go ahead and complete the registration form and the Elections Division should be able to process it. We recommend including a phone number. That way if there is a problem, the Elections Division can call you to resolve it.

Problem: The system does not recognize my driver’s license number.

Answer: Most of the DMV’s database is now electronic, but if you last renewed your driver’s license before 2004, then your signature may not be on file electronically, in which case the Elections Division cannot use your driver’s license number to verify your identity. In this case, you can register with the WFP by mailing in a registration form. Click here to download a printable version. You can also email us at and we will be happy to send you a registration card in the mail.
